Why Does Time Speed Up as You Get Older?

The clock never changes. So why can the same year feel enormous at eight and vanish at forty? Your brain quietly changes what a “year” means.

When you are young, a year is enormous — a huge slice of everything you have ever lived. Summer stretches out with no visible end. The wait for a birthday is an act of endurance. A single school year feels like an era you will never climb out of.

Then something happens that no one warns you about. The years begin to thin. One birthday arrives, and then — you blink — you are somehow years further on, with the peculiar feeling that you were only just here. The Earth has not started spinning faster. Your watch is fine. Nothing about the physical clock has changed at all. What changed is the machinery inside your skull that turns raw duration into the felt experience of a life.

So the real question is stranger and better than “why does time speed up.” It is this: if the clock never changes, why can the same year feel completely different depending on when — and how — you live it? The answer is not one thing. It is several mechanisms stacked together, and they reveal something profound about how the mind builds the experience of being alive.

A year gets smaller

Each year is a thinner slice

There is a simple piece of arithmetic hiding inside the feeling, and it is the oldest explanation on record. To a small child, a single year is a large fraction of their whole life. To someone in middle age, that same year is a thin ring on a very wide tree. Each new year is a smaller share of the total behind it, so it takes up a smaller portion of your sense of how much time you have.

The idea goes back to the nineteenth-century philosopher Paul Janet, who proposed that we judge a stretch of time against the length of the life we have already accumulated; the psychologist William James carried it into English. It produces one arresting result: if you take the proportional scale seriously, the felt midpoint of your life — the point where half your subjective experience of time is already behind you — lands not in middle age, but somewhere in your late teens.

That is not a literal claim about anyone’s life. No one divides each birthday by their age. But it hands us a real intuition — and there is a problem with it, which is the good part. A child doesn’t only experience a year as a bigger fraction. A child experiences the world differently.

Your brain records by novelty

Imagine two weeks. In the first, you wake in the same bed, eat the same breakfast, take the same route to the same work, see the same faces, and sleep — repeat. In the second, you travel somewhere you have never been. You get lost. You eat food you cannot name, fumble through a hard conversation, see a landscape that rearranges something behind your eyes.

Both weeks hold exactly the same number of seconds. But a year later, which will you remember as longer? Almost certainly the second — and that reveals the thing at the heart of the mystery. Your brain is not storing an even, continuous recording of your life. It spends its attention and encoding lavishly on what is new. A novel experience forces work — where am I, what is that, what happens next — and that work lays down rich, detailed memory. It creates landmarks. When you later look back, a stretch’s felt length is built almost entirely from how many landmarks are standing in it.

An ordinary midweek day years into a routine asks almost nothing of that machinery. The brain already knows what the day is; it does not take detailed notes. So it doesn’t.

The boring day

Two clocks, running opposite

Sit through a meeting you do not care about and time crawls — you check the clock and it has barely moved. But ask yourself months later what actually happened in those hours, and you may find almost nothing to recall. It felt long while you lived it and became nearly weightless the instant it ended.

Now the opposite: a first date, a near-accident, a day in a city you have never seen. In the moment it flies — it’s over already? — yet afterward the memory is enormous. You can walk back through the light, the smells, the order of events. The living of it was fast; the remembering of it is huge.

So there are really two different questions wearing the same words: how fast did time feel while I lived it, and how long does it feel when I look back. They are not the same, and they often run in opposite directions. The “life is speeding up” feeling is almost entirely the second — a verdict passed in hindsight, looking back over capable, comfortable years that memory has quietly compressed.

Childhood, again

An age of building the model

This gives childhood a second, richer explanation on top of the arithmetic. A child is not only living fewer years; a child is building the model of reality itself. The first snowfall is not filed under “weather” — it is a barrage of open questions: what is this, why is it cold, why does it fall, where does it go. The first sight of the ocean is not “a lot of water”; it is an entirely new category of scale. The moment a child understands that the Moon is a solid object and not a lamp in the sky, the whole structure of their universe reorganizes.

Childhood is near-constant model construction, and construction leaves a dense footprint. Adulthood, for all its depth, is mostly the model running — smoothly, efficiently, and with far fewer new entries in the log.

The stranger hypothesis

A slowing inner frame rate?

Everything so far is about memory — how the past is encoded and later measured. But there is a bolder idea reaching for something happening in the living present. The physicist Adrian Bejan has proposed that aging may change the raw rate at which the brain takes in perceptual “snapshots.” As neural networks grow larger and their pathways age, the argument goes, signals process a little more slowly, so an older brain may register fewer distinct mental images per second of real time — and with fewer internal frames marking the passage, more clock-time slips between them, and the world seems to hurry.

It is a genuinely intriguing idea, and it deserves to be met on honest terms: it is a hypothesis, not an established result. We have strong, replicated evidence that attention, novelty, emotion, and memory shape our sense of time. The claim that aging literally lowers a neural “frame rate,” and that this is what makes life accelerate, is far more speculative — a plausible model, not a settled finding. And that is not a disappointment; it is the honest texture of a live science.

Can you make life feel longer?

Novelty is just contrast

Not on the clock — you cannot pour more than a day into a day. But if the felt length of your life is built from how densely it is encoded, then that length is, to a surprising degree, something you can influence. The lever is novelty, but not the exhausting kind. You do not need to circle the globe or manufacture constant excitement; a life spent frantically chasing newness to cheat the clock would be its own misery.

The gentler version is to keep introducing genuinely new information into otherwise familiar systems. Learn something hard. Take the other road home. Read outside your lane. Build something you have never built. Talk to someone you normally wouldn’t. Be bad at something new on purpose. Because novelty does one specific thing: it creates contrast — and contrast is what gives memory its structure, the landmarks that keep a stretch of time from dissolving into a single undifferentiated block.

Not a productivity hack

Routine isn’t the enemy

Here is the caveat that keeps this honest, and it matters as much as the science. Routine is what lets a human being function at all — imagine relearning how to brush your teeth every morning and you will never underrate automaticity again. The goal is not to make every moment novel. It is only to keep your whole life from flattening into one indistinguishable loop.

And something worth saying even more plainly: a life that feels longer is not automatically a better one. Some of the most meaningful hours anyone gets are almost pure routine — cooking dinner beside someone you love, walking a trail you have walked a hundred times, reading the same book to a child who wants it again. Those moments do not need novelty to be worth having. The aim is not to trick your brain into believing you lived longer. It is to make sure you actually noticed that you were living at all.

The strange part

The clock measures. You construct

The universe keeps an objective clock. The Earth turns, atoms oscillate, stars burn down, and the seconds fall in a perfectly even line. None of them care whether you are bored, or whether you are young or old. The duration is indifferent and exact.

And yet inside one human skull, that same interval can become an eternity, an instant, a gray blur, or a stretch so vivid it feels like a whole small life. The clock measures duration. Your brain constructs experience. Those are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where your entire felt life actually happens.

So maybe the question was never how do I slow time down. Maybe it is: how much of the time I am given will actually become part of me? The next time someone sighs, where did the year go, you might ask a gentler question back — was the year truly empty, or simply repetitive? And then a stranger one, the kind that opens a door you can’t quite close again: if your memories are what give your past its size, how much of your life has already passed through you without ever becoming a memory at all?
